Join the Maggasekha Community on Discord

Most of you may know there is an community on the website/app called discord. We are actually hitting out 10th year of existence next year. In the old days we use to give open invites to people on reddit and other places, and it become too crazy, so the past five years or so we have only brought people in by word of mouth and me mentioning it on my streams.

One thing I realized I never did however, was regularly talk about it on the website to encourage all friends of maggasekha who are not on it, to dip their toes in the water and give it a try.

We have both Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis in the community and do regular events like reading suttas together. There are places for discussion, and many channels filled to the brim with dhamma writings, media, and related materials.

So if you are interested in joining us, simply send me an email and I can get you an invite link, we’d be happy to have you with us.

Back in New Jersey for Vassa, all regular events resumed, Weekend Zoom Retreats Coming Up

Greetings friends,

It’s been about six weeks since my last post, which I made right before entering Abhayagiri at the beginning of June. As stated the initial plan was to go for a month, and then a decision would be made for me to stay for the vassa or not.

I find it quite funny that the thing that in the end caused me to be unable to stay at Abhayagiri, was nowhere near on the list of possible disqualifiers I thought about. It was not because I couldn’t meld with the community, in fact I melded quite well and a number of monastics were disappointed I wasn’t staying the vassa.

It was the fact that, although Abhayagiri is technically not vegetarian, Ajahn Passano and Ajahn Amaro made it clear many years ago that vegetarian was preferred. Abhayagri it receives relatively little meat occasionally, something I guess I had not noticed in my previous short visits, and probably related to my assumption that in Thai forest places I never have to worry about nutrition.

It’s a shame too, because I loved my stay there. Being with community like that is something I rarely experience as a nomad, and it didn’t really exist at Bhavana either. I thought I would go through a bit of a withdrawal period, being disconnected , but from the second I arrived there my mind was at peace, and I jumped right into life with the monks.

For the first two weeks I didn’t even ask to use the computer for emails, I was enjoying being dead to the world and being in a place where I am nothing but a regular majjhima monk with no teaching or other responsibilities except the daily work, and being in a fully supportive environment for living the monastic life as purely as possible.

When I started noticing the lack of meat, I started a meat journal to judge if what was coming in was enough for me to not fall into the brain fog , low energy state I fall into after about 3 weeks at a purely vegetarian place( my policy is to to not stay more then a month at a vegetarian place). I also spoke to lay residents and monastics to get a feel as to what was normal. By the 15th however I realized that there was not.

Couple that with an hour total of climbing the mountain to my kuti each day, in an environment where 100 degree days is the norm and 115 degrees possible, I knew that it was not going to work.

I predicted that most likely sometime in the first month of vassa I would enter into that state, I was way off, because I entered into it at the start of my 4th and last week there, which made that last week quite miserable for me, but confirmed I had made the right choice.

So around the 15th I asked for a meeting with the abbot, Ajahn Nyaniko. I told him I had made the decision that rather then risking me staying months in the brain fog, low energy state and being a burden to the community that I would not stay for the vassa. I told the Ajahns that I respect this place, and my own mental clarity and sanity too much to stay.

For those of you who have not heard me talk about being in that brain fog low energy state, this is what it’s like. You wake up from a full nights sleep and instead of energy being refilled 100%, its refilled 30%, you have so little energy that your brain clarity is essentially gone, thinking about basic things becomes challenging and your ability to endure hardships is gone. Patience is gone, mindfulness is gone, and apathy dominates, including towards my sila and monastic rules and most things in general. Skillfulness goes out the window and mara reigns.

It is not a good state for me personally, or for the people around me, hence why I have made the policy of not staying at a vegetarian place more then a month, by the 3rd week I’m already in that state.

So with all that explained. I’m back in NJ for the vassa with my father and all regular activities are back. I am also setting up three weekend zoom retreats for August to October.

As for a Colorado Maggasekha Vihara drive, we are around 600 out of 1000 pledged monthly dana, getting close, but still a long way to go, I have much work to do in terms of calling places and working through some barriers, but I must say that the plan to be living in Colorado by this time next year is looking promising.

practice well and be well.

Abhayagiri Tomorrow- and Fundraising Update

As of tomorrow I will be at abhayagiri and my internet access will be severely limited. As stated before I will most likely be able to check emails once a week, so if you need to get in contact with me you can.

Ive been calling apartments in Denver to ask a few questions. It turns out that for proof of income all they need is to see that the money is entering a bank account monthly. this means that those who want to support but dont want to go through donorbox can do so, but please mark that the funds are for rent.

this is a strong possible roadblock to renting so far, but if we get enough donations totaling 2k a month it should be easy to prove.

This requirement may also not be universal, I will have to keep talking to and visiting more locations to see. This November I will be going to Colorado for a few weeks to do just that.

Lastly, i realized that the link to the page i created had the image of the QR code and I think it may of given off the wrong impression, so i was able to change that.

So off I go to Abhayagiri for who knows how long, until then spread the word and share the vision and hopefully this time next year Maggasekha Vihara will be reality.

Heading to California Soon – Maggasekha Events Shutting Down for Now

I have mentioned my plans throughout the past year to prepare friends and supporters, but the time has almost arrived for me to go to California. The plan will be for me to stay at Abhayagiri Monastery through June and into July. This will provide the Ajahns there time to see how well I meld with the community and whether my presence there for the Vassa would be appropriate.

At that point a decision will be made if I will be allowed to stay for the Vassa or not. If all goes as planned I will be in California from June to November. If it does not go as planned then I will be coming back to NJ in early July and spending Vassa there with family.

2026 Vassa will be 10 years as a Bhikkhu for me, and hopefully I will be making my attempt to live in Colorado then. This leaves me one last vassa to be in some level of seclusion, with limited internet access and no teaching responsibilities, in a place renowned for growing good monastics. I hope to learn all I can for the not to distant future where I may be ordaining bhikkhus myself.

So as of today there will be no further livestreams or Maggasekha events on Youtube and Insight Timer until I return from California, whether that be in July or late November. I plan to stop by Colorado on the way back east in November to start visiting apartment complexes and getting info for my attempt next summer. We are still about 1/3 funded for renting an apartment in Colorado, if you are able and wish to support, please do, and spread the word as well.

The Monastery nor I will be in total seclusion during this time, but they are very strict on internet use there, so I will at most probably be able to check email once a week unless there is need. If there are any issues you can email me at : bhikkhujayasara@gmail.com or in case of emergency contact the monastery and I will get the info – https://www.abhayagiri.org/

Colorado Plan: 5-22-25 : Two Week Update

It’s been two weeks since I made the announcement of a plan to start living in Colorado full time by summer 2026. I’ll be leaving for California soon where I will hopefully spend five months offline in seclusion, so I wanted to provide an update before going dark next week.

As of this post, we are at around $400 monthly pledged out of a goal of $1500 a month , close to 1/3 of the way there.

Some people have expressed concern about going through companies and would like to support directly. This is understandable and there are many ways to provide Dana as found on the website, but if its specifically for rental I’d need to know for accounting purposes.

I’ve been researching possible apartment complexes and seeing which ones may be best in terms of being close to library branches and public transport. I’m glad we are starting all of this so early because some possible roadblocks have already came up.

One possible roadblock is that many places require proof of income of 2x the rent, which would mean we would want to raise the goal from 1500 to $2000 pledged a month to start Maggasekha Vihara. We are also looking into ways of circumventing this and I will be calling a few complexes before leaving for California.

No doubt other road blocks and obstacles will arise to challenge us, but with your support and some determination I believe we can overcome all obstacles and get Maggasekha Vihara up and running next year.

If you would like to help us, please share the link around as more awareness will mean more possible people willing to provide Dana towards bringing the vision of Maggasekha to life.

Two Month Colorado Stay Ends

My two months stay in Colorado is over, it was extremely productive and keep an eye out for a week or so where i will have a big announcement regarding Maggaskha and Colorado.

now its back to NJ for two weeks at Empty cloud and time with family before going to Abhayagiri in June.

Loss, Gratitude, and Flights

There is a gentleman who works for a corporation in the airline industry who has been generously covering most of my airline flights for the past three years, which is no small task since I’ve been flying to California and Colorado regularly.

Recently I was informed that at least for the next year or perhaps indefinitely my flights would no longer be covered. This is a sad loss, but also a chance to show my gratitude for such generosity during the times when I really needed it.

I still remember to this day when I asked Ajahn Brahm about him traveling so lightly all those years ago during our first meeting. He told me “trust in kamma to provide”, a statement I still ponder often to this day, but which has been proven true to me over and over.

Perhaps the support was there when it was needed, and now , soon, the nomad life may be winding down to it’s end and I don’t need it as much as I did before.

I recently bought tickets to California in June using saved up donation money, and it seems that from here on in I will need to be very sparing as I have very little dana to cover things like expensive flights. From here on in I will only be using donation money to fly to Colorado.

If Buddhist groups would like me to attend ordinations or request me to travel, they would need to cover the costs of my flights from here on in.

Thank you for your support these years my friend. May such generosity shown towards me lead to peace and happiness. Being a monastic really teaches you the power of generosity, and gratitude.
